I have to say that owning a home has been a blast so far! Yes, it is A LOT of work, and the list of projects only grows by the minute. But when you have great folks around to help you with those projects (thanks to all you who’ve been able to so far!) it makes for a MUCH more enjoyable experience. Russ is with Eden Homes & Design, and has been a close friend going on almost 10 years now. We went to work on this project yesterday and got the door in (though you can’t see it here). I wanted to post this picture for a couple reasons, while also expanding on why I’m starting to include more personal photos.

1. I feel like with my aim to be “professional” my blog has taken a turn from it’s original intent: to be a creative outlet outside of “work”, while keeping folks posted on what I was working on.

2. It’s fun to show photos, but I always appreciate getting to know the folks behind the lens. I used to post more photos of Espen and other daily occurrences, and anticipate that this will progress once again. My overall goal is to not make this the “Joel Bock” show, but to give some foundation for readers to understand my perspective and approach to what I photograph.

3. As it’s easier to look at a photo rather than read everything the blogger has written (I confess, I am just as guilty of this as the next reader!), I want to speak things that are important to me via my images, thus alleviating that task to a degree.

Which brings us back to this photo. My friends and family are important to me. They make me laugh, think more intentionally about how I live my life, and are an immense support and encouragement. I love how this photo captures my gratitude for all that. And thanks, Russ, for working on the house with me – don’t forget to send me the invoice!

Wow. Has it really been this long since I’ve posted? All I can say is the amount of painting and moving we’ve been doing has had nothing to do with that…well, maybe a little bit. BUT, we just got internet at the new house and I am again up and running! So, to kick off reentering the blogisphere I’m posting a few images of a recent trip with the family to one of my favorite spots on the Oregon Coast: Twin Rocks. It was just a day trip, but it resembles all the time we’ve been spending together lately, which has been a lot of fun. Which is also hilarious because I am in NONE of these photos! Guess that’s what you get from being a photographer…

That’s right! We are now officially home owners of our first house! I’ve been more than stoked to be working on my own home, getting a few new tools, and creating a new space for our family to make memories. There will be a ton of photos coming, I’m sure, but for now here’s a photo from the street.

We had some fun as a family today, hanging out at one of my childhood parks in Portland: Laurelhurst Park. Although the huge stainless steel slide has been replaced by a newer, “safer” play structure, I was bummed to not be able to take a photo of my own son on it, just like my dad did with my brother and I were young. We still had fun watching the ducks, eating our picnic, and hitting the sea saw. Hope everyone else was able to enjoy the brilliant weather. And for the gear-geeks out there (you know who you are!), these images were taken on a new-to-me Canon 135 f/2 L series lens – thank you Craigslist!

I had way too much fun with Espen, playing in the late afternoon sun yesterday. The best part about it was when we both took our cameras out (he got a little digital camera for his birthday) and were photographing the flowers together. At one point he got fed up with his little camera and told me he wanted to take a photo with my camera (the Canon 1Ds Mark II), and so the last photo on this page was taken by Espen. I held the camera off the ground, he gripped it, looked through the view finder, framed the shot, and pushed the shutter button. Way to go EP! Hope you were all able to enjoy the sun while it lasted.

That’s right, the boy is now three! Crazy to believe we’ve already come this far. So, in celebration he and I mad a photo booth the other night and proceeded to take photos of one another. He decided on all the hats, and other random props. He also did an amazing job of taking photos, for which I gladly posed. The image of the two of us together was taking by EP using a remote shutter release. Very cool! Leave some birthday love for the little man if you have a moment.

And this one (below) I just had to include as it captures his amazing eyes, and would be great for a got milk ad.

We had a day of chillin’ at the mountain not long ago in which EP had his first tubing experience. As the picture reveals he was enjoying the snow quite a bit!

This shoot was a blast, especially as we were shooting on location in Rockaway Beach, OR. Since Grayce is also my cousin, the whole family, Cherice, and I had a blast running around to different locations and enjoying the coastal breeze. Congrats Grayce!
