In my spare time (i.e., 4:30am in the morning!) I like to get outdoors. Today I traveled with my friend, Bryan Rupp to the Wilson River for some fly fishing. It was an amazing morning, with perfectly overcast conditions, complete with Brook Trout. Here’s Bryan letting loose on the river.

Bryan Rupp and I hit the slopes last night at Meadows. Although it wasn’t the best snow we’d ever seen, it was great to take a break and enjoy the view below.

We had a day of chillin’ at the mountain not long ago in which EP had his first tubing experience. As the picture reveals he was enjoying the snow quite a bit!

Over the holidays I had a chance to connect with an old friend and we hit up the Circuit in Portland for some bouldering. I had never been to this gym before, and was blown away by the sheer volume of wall! There was even a hanging wall (literally hanging from the ceiling!) that you can see at the bottom. Jason and I go way back, probably to when I can first remember. Ah, good times. Lately he’s been setting new routes, working on first ascents, and in general shredding on the rocks of western Colorado and Utah. I always love climbing with him because I get to see a true artist at work. I’ll be looking forward to climbing again J!

And of course I had to play with the tilt-shift lens again! (above right and below)

Newberg incident…

That’s right, we were in the middle of an incident here in Newberg! It began with a phone call…pipes leaking…roof flooding into storefronts. When we arrived there was a smell like hot wires and a hint of smoke. After shutting off the water to the entire building (!) I heard running water through the door of the suspect apartment still gushing, followed by the fire alarm. That was when Bryan called the fire station!

They came down in Newberg style, hemming the place in behind and before, ready to work their magic….

Unfortunately they arrived TOO quickly and I was blocked in by two fire trucks (below). Oh well, time to take more pictures!

The fire people (there were men AND women) surveyed the situation, questioned a few folks, and formulated a plan of attack…

Having formed their plan they rushed the stairs, busted the door open, and found….well, I believe it was just pipes leaking and no fire (gratefully!).

So, we enjoyed the freezing of hands and teeth as we smiled in the seasonal glow of the holiday lights. Quite a day; never saw that one coming!

The day got an early start. Trucks pulled up towing wave runners. Surfers suited up. The tide slowly began to creep in.

Surfers were watching the waves, sporting life jackets for the big waters.

We got setup on the hill, ready to see our first Nelscott competition. The fog began to burn off.

The wave runners were pushed and pulled into the break by teams.

The shore break was fairly large, so a bit of maneuvering was required to get out to the reef.

But it was worth it when they did…

Marc (below) and I had fun taking turns at the lens, shooting video and stills.

And then the winners dropped in.

Not a bad day for the Oregon Coast. Looking forward to next year already.

Second night we chilled with our good friends the Chapmans in Fresno. We had fun at a local park, eating some amazing Ethiopian food, accidentally taking their frisbee when we left (sorry! we’ll, mail it =), and drinking tea and coffee over a great game of Squint. We started the next day with some famous Chapman coffee cake (famous because it’s supposed to be eaten with milk!), then headed out for the bay area only to change our mind and make a detour to Yosemite on the way. We’d never been, so it was a lot of fun and amazing to see what John Muir and many others advocated for, and Ansel Adams visually captured forever.

Espen got to picking up leaves and pretending they were a camera, then would take our picture. Very creative! (below left)

Half dome (below left) and Yosemite Falls (below right) were both amazing to see. It really is hard to convey the sheer size of these rock faces. They literally shot up out of the valley. It was like Smith Rock on crack!

Although a short trip, it was definitely worth it! We’re looking forward to returning in the future for a longer duration as there was so much potential hiking and photo taking. I had a lot of fun taking some shots at the Newberg High School homecoming game a couple weeks back, and I’m finally catching up a bit so I’ll post a couple. Tigers won the game, and here was the first touch down:
